The Third Eye
By Wang Qian’en
My husband and I were replacing the tiles of our side-house.
My husband was on the roof asking me for more tiles when I fixed my eyes on him instead of handing him the tiles. At that moment I saw Uncle Liu’s sheep lying peacefully in the warm sunshine and the sheep turned to cast a glance at me.
In the evening, my husband held me in his arms and said smilingly, “It’s really good to be a government official; no wonder everyone runs for the title.” I sat up at once, as I saw Uncle Liu’s sheep again. At the moment Uncle Liu was feeding niblets to his sheep. “Don’t feed niblets to a sheep!” I cried. “Why not?” My husband sat up, too. “Years ago, my grandpa fed a few niblets to his sheep, so that the sheep became greedy, struggled free its reins and finally died from a bloated stomach.” I said.
The following day I approached Uncle Liu. “I fed only a few niblets to make the sheep fatter.” said Uncle Liu. “You mustn’t have fed even one niblet!” I insisted.
Once again I saw Uncle Liu’s sheep. Having struggled free its reins, the sheep ran over to the drying niblets, licking sweetly. Then Uncle Liu hurried to pull his sheep away. I said to my husband, “It was those few niblets Uncle Liu fed to the sheep that had made it so greedy as to try everything---” He interrupted me, “What has come over you? Stop your nonsense!” My eyes streamed with tears. “Listen to me, will you? I don’t care whether we are poor or not. But what if anything untoward should happen to you? Think of me and our kid!” My husband cast a hard look at me before he slammed the door behind him.
It was out of our villa that I looked, seeing Uncle Liu’s sheep with a bloated stomach. Uncle Liu crouched down, groaning beside the dead sheep. “Heartless bastard! You do leave me and our kid behind!” I was crying my heart out.
My husband was charged with embezzlement of public funds.
